Has anyone tried one of these as a simple armature?
looks interesting if a bit flimsy.
I think you hit the nail on the head with your assessment... interesting and flimsy.
The sole review listed there states that he can't hold his own shape. That alone would take him out of contention.
Now, if the joints were able to be made tighter, the feet were to be swapped out with ones that were solid and could take a tie-down and the hands were swapped out with aluminum ones, it could work as a nice (and inexpensive) start.
So I saw these in stock at our local Blick store and couldn't resist- The joints, small rivets holding the wire, are tight (in a good way) and it has a pretty good range of motion and no problem with fine movements and holding position. I think what the reviewer meant was that it doesn't come on a stand like the wood figures.
It would be a simple matter to add tie downs and it looks like it wouldn't take much to customize.
It will be interesting to see how the joints hold up, and whether they get too loose with time.
Seems to me to be a nice (and cheap!) medium ground between twisted wire armatures and the expensive ball and socket jobs.
