hi aishwarya.a.reddy,

have you looked at the handbooks provided by this site? maybe yes, but if not, here are the links:
here and here
also, i personally find this video very good and instructive (and has a nice music )

there are also people who use action figures and stikfas as toys.
i am not sure you will find other techniques than own made wire armatures and ball & socket ones, but i may be wrong.
please note i do not own the rights of the media i posted. i just linked them as they maybe could help you. anyway, as an animation student you could try to reproduce the procedures and build your own armatures and use your own photos. i mean, you will probably need to build your own armature someday, right?

Tom Brierton has a book on machining armatures for stop motion, I don't own a copy myself but I'm sure that would give a detailed explanation of construction methods and techniques.

the video was really helpful. thank you. and yes i do have to make my own armature  thanks a lot for the links too.

Here's a link to the e-book version but have a look round on the net and see what you can find http://www.amazon.com/Stop-Motion-Armature-Machining-ebook/dp/B005M...

Tom's armature book is worthwhile, it covers making several types of joint very well.  I didn't find it that much practical use for me personally, because I don't have a Sherline (or any type of mill) and am not likely to get one. So I have to use cruder methods, like cutting aluminium blocks with a bandsaw rather than precisely machining them.   Or even cruder methods, like armature wire, which works for me 90% of the time.   But I'm not sorry I got the book, it's good to see how it's done by someone who knows.

thank you.. i will try the wire armature too.

I don't suppose you have a pillar drill Nick? I found a rather unique way to machine joints here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NlwgeUFqLsk

The intro is a bit surreal but I hadn't considered that technique, seems like a novel take on machining joints, unless I just have not seen it before?
