taking one frame at a time since 1999

I am planing to bye new camera, and it seems that Canon EOS R or RP is way to go. Has enyone some experiences about those?

Stopmotion Firmware is something that seems to be great for Dragon. But does it maes up the video shooting options? "The shooting screen cannot be displayed with resolution of 1920 x ...

Video options would be great for some video projects. For video R would be great, but with Stopmotion firmware HDMI out is disabled, and you can't use better video quality (10bit). So it seems that there isn't any reason to by R, and RP is way to go. (?)

Does anyone have some experience about Canon eos R/RP?

I wouldn't jump on this right now. Seems there is some overheating issues. And it is also so very expensive. Personally I would invest in better lenses, a gearhead or a motion control slide - if I had that kind of money.

I’ll let you know. I just bought the EOS RP with DF Firmware. Still putting my kit together. So far so good.

Hi, can I ask how you're getting on with it? I'm thinking of doing the same thing. Ben

Technically it all works great. Since I am on a job now, I haven't shot anything except a few tests. I am happy with the RP. It is less expensive than the R and does everything I need it to do. The Dragonframe Firmware gives me an incredible live image. I have a couple of manual lenses and adapters plus the AC power adapter and DC Coupler. Tether Tools makes reliable USB-C Cables, got a couple of those and it is connected to a Mac Mini running Dragonframe. I am thinking the first thing I shoot is something for Stopmo Jam 3.

I've sent an enquiry to Canon Australia to see if the firmware is available in my country. I don't believe the camera is sold with the firmware pre-installed anywhere outside the US as yet, I've heard from animators in the UK who said they couldn't get it.  The Canon AU website live chat person (general Canon products) had no idea what I was talking about, and referred it to their camera specialists, who will email me.  It will be interesting to see how it works outside the US.

I'm still reasonably happy animating with my EOS 7d, but the bigger live view is definitely a worthwhile improvement.  I usually try to ease-in with some very tiny moves at the start, and I can't always see them on the screen with the rather grainy 1056 x 704 live view I get from the 7d.  I could improve the graininess with brighter lighting, but the resolution is still a limitation.

I got a reply - Looks like it can be done, but not pre-installed. Camera has to be sent to a Canon service centre.  Cost here is AU $149 (around US $114), plus shipping costs.  Standard live view is a bit small, so you would definitely want the upgrade.

• [Disp. performance] cannot be set
• The shooting screen cannot be displayed with resolution of 1920 x 1280 pixels and MF peaking will not show up even if [MF peaking settings] is set to [On] under the following conditions:
  –  When an EF-S lens is used o When [Multiple exposure] is set
  –  When [Cropping/aspect ratio] is set to an option [1.6x (crop)]
  –  When the shooting screen is magnified
  –  When you keep holding down the shutter button after shooting

Availability:
The service will be available from 1st October 2020 as a chargeable upgrade, exclusively via Canon authorised service-centres.

I got a reply from Canon Pro in the U.K. They said only the R and RP are available to use with the firmware upgrade. No option to buy pre installed but the canon service centres in the U.K will do it for £86 including return delivery. This is a Canon Pro price however as you need to be a member. You can still get it done by the same people but might cost more and take longer if you're not a member.

I'm just trying to decide between the two cameras whilst wondering if they'll make it available for the 5R soon too. Ben

Canon Direct has a new page about the Dragonframe Firmware. It seems that anyone in the UK could order from them, correct? I purchased a lens off ebay from the UK over the Christmas break and it only took about a week to get here.

It seems that both R and RP with the DF firmware are currently on backorder. It was the same case when I was looking to buy my RP in December but it became available within a few weeks. I did call them to get an estimate and at the time, really didn't know much about it.

Good page, I've saved it. It's great that Canon are actually aware that people use their cameras for stop motion, and have done something to make a couple of their models more suitable.  Not used to that!
