Thought I'd start a thread where we can post questions and concenrs for the new site.

As Nick already suggested, my main concern would be the possibility of losing all the vast information on the old site. Would that remain as an archive or something?

not sure, doesn't look like I can move it here easily.  I am actually ok with it but possibly a 'best of the Message Board' could be created and incorporated here somehow.  There is some very good info on the board and it represents a slice of stopmo history, but there are also threads that are meandering and outdated.

Also, (and Nick already brought this one up too) - Can the message board be divided up into categories like the original board?

Ok, I found a way to create different categories.  I put a few up just now.

Hey, it's looking good!!

And I like the ability to go to My Discussions and just see ones you've taken part in.

I should have the LINKS pages filled in today. I should be able to turn this loose this weekend. It would be great to get a ton of feedback.  I am having some FB integration issues.  Emailing link to a friend issues.  I want everything tested.

Yeah me too.

My biggest concern remains what will happen to the original message board?

I just checked, and Archive.org is unable to display SMA for some reason. Of course, saving selected threads and transferring them over here is a great solution, but it still means losing so much great info that's tucked away in seemingly unrelated threads (you know how conversations tend to wander).

The thought of all of it disappearing except for a few threads fills me with terror... it would be like the burning of the library at Alexandria, when most of the world's collected knowledge was destroyed. In fact people on the board have said that they think of us as akin to the Irish monks who laboriously hand-copied all the world's greatest known books and thereby saved the knowledge that would otherwise have been lost.

But if the old board just disappears, then the vast majority of that knowledge will be lost forever (unless people are willing to repeat what they've said there over the next dozen years or so, basically re-creating the old records from memory).

How long would the old board stay up after the switch? Would it be possible to at least keep it online for a year or so, so people can work on some way of preserving it permanently? I'm sure someone would be willing to work on finding a way - there's got to be some kind of solution - and I mean that doesn't require you (Anthony) to continue to pay for it.

Please donsider leaving it up for a while so after the switch we can work on finding a solution!

I am considering everything and I don't want to rush this in any way.  But I would like people to move over to the new site.  It is the direction I've been envisioning for years.

Also, I would like to know who this somebody is who knows the best way to preserve the old board.  (if you are out there, please come forward)  I think some of the board is worth saving but I am not convinced that I should preserve the entire thing.

If I did decide to leave it up for a year, I would disable posting, hopefully that is easy to do without having to go thru each post.

"Also, I would like to know who this somebody is who knows the best way to preserve the old board."

Ha ha - yeah, I want to know that too!! I did a little googling today but didn't find anything useful yet (didn't have much web time). But maybe once you've announced the new site or switched over to it, and we get the regular members to start poosting over here we can make a thread asking if anybody knows how to do it.

Here's a question if anybody knows the answer - I see we have Inboxes, but I don't see a way to send a PM.  Ok, technically a statement since there's no question mark, but it's an interrogative statement.

Each member page has a Send Message link near their avatar.

I'm a little confused ... so now I am doing a Reply vs. a Comment? (read my comment somewhere else here). Everyone already forgot about our initial private conversating  where I rambleed suggested if it is possible to freeze the old site so no one can sign up ... but it can still be searchable? Re-title it as ARCHIVES: Stop Motion Animation First Decade or whatever name.

I believe Anthony mentioned to Uncle LIO in private email, that the database is stored on the server is called  MySQL.  SMW News blog  is setup on server as MySQL and he did experiment creating a backup copy of the database.  It was kind of stressful because the MySQL user interface is difficult to understand. SMW News content is small compared to SMA.com where the storage database must be mega-large :o

Would be cool if database can be converted to some text format but maybe require services of a geek or nerd that's into this stuff. Sven Bonnichsen would be able to find someone but costs some $$$.

Or ... do not even bother trying to bring the old database into new format. Too much hassle and easier to have as separate Archive SMA.com. Uncle LIO's solution not the slickest but would work ... lock-down the old SMA.com have a front  title page as Archives, and also,  at the top of every page it would say archives so visitors don't get confused (do lots of crosslinking to new SMA.com).  Google has feature, where you can create a custom search just for a specific sites.
