StopMotionAnimation.com

taking one frame at a time since 1999

Hi there, I was just wondering if many people use the software and where I could find the numbers.  Out of curiosity really.

Cause I spoke to an old friend who is a stop-motion animator, and she told me she uses Adobe After Effects!!??

for stopmotion there is a lot of software, you can use even a Adobe Lightroom (lol), but for professional work, there is only two option: Stop Motion Pro, and Dragonframe. and yet, SMP is much more worst for comfort work then DF.

as for numbers, ofc there is NO numbers, that you trying to find.

You can't use After Effects in the same way that you use Dragonframe. It's not a frame grabber and doesn't have the features that a frame grabber has.

I suspect that there is a steady trickle of serious animators who buy DF every year. I have no regrets in having invested in this excellent program, and just now am looking to upgrade to DF4 with its Bluetooth controller.

I live in After Effects. I haven't used Dragonframe yet. I haven't seen the need (yet). I understand the advantages to frame capture but I like working like  Harryhausen. After Effects is the most powerful compositor.

I use After Effects, but not for free grabbing, it is for a different part of the film making process.   AfterI have captured my frames, I need to do things like crop and re-size the image, adjust the colours, paint out support rigs, add various effects, and do green screen compositing, and I use a couple of programs for those things - TV Paint and After Effects.

I've used Stop Motion Pro for frame grabbing, and now use Dragonframe because I use a Mac -  it runs on a Mac OS and my windows PC for running SMP died.  Both are good.  I suppose the makers of DF would know how many copies they sell, but they might not want to make that public.

I animated before frame grabbers were around, shooting on film, and using a frame grabber is a big improvement.

Completely agree that AE is amazing in what it can do, especially in compositing. Lots of respect for those who choose not to use frame grabbers, but that is a choice to work in an old-fashioned way.

Just to say that I have just upgraded to Dragonframe 4 with their Bluetooth controller. It is better than ever, with some more features, and the wireless controller will be invaluable.

It's available in the UK from Animation Toolkit, avoiding unpleasant surprises like customs charges and international shipping costs.

I upgraded my copy of Dragon Frame as soon as I heard it was available, and it feels more slick. Happy to give $ to support DragonFrame.
Shipping the parcel all the way to to Australia was astonishingly fast. To make the Bluetooth keypad work with my desktop Windows PC, I needed to get a USB-to-Bluetooth Adaptor; this is okay because eBay has them for less than $5. Set-up is simple. It  may not sound like much of an improvement at first, but when you try it you realise the cable-free keypad is a real boon.

Cheers,
Damien
