Here is a list of known issues and problems with the new site.  Please add to this list if you find more.

Message Board:  No emoticons.  Renamed Forum to Message Board on top tab but can't figure out how to change it on right sidebar, still reads as Forum.

Uploaded movies: uploaded videos don't appear on the iPad, or in Chrome browsers.  Just a black empty space.

Photos:  slideshow doesn't work on iPad (Flash?)  Just a black empty space instead

Facebook:  integration is spotty.  sometimes the post will appear on FB, sometimes when clicking on the link the following message will appear on FB:

Sorry

The link you are trying to visit has been reported as abusive by Facebook users. To learn more about staying safe on the internet, visit Facebook's Security Page. Please also read the Wikipedia articles on malware and phishing.

This matter will be resolved eventually, it just might take awhile to get it working correctly. I received this response from the HELP Dept today:

Sorry to hear you're encountering difficulty here. There is actually currently an issue with sharing content to Facebook where Facebook is blocking our links as spam. Please rest assured that our Policy and Safety team is working on contacting Facebook in order to resolve this issue. I'm not sure what is involved in order to clear this up, but we will do our best to get things working properly again. Thanks for your patience as we look into resolving this issue.

Thanks Tim. I've been able to keep the costs down on the new site so far because ning.com makes it fairly easy for me to set it up myself. They do offer a service to design and set it up as well.

The cost of preserving the old message board is an unknown at this point. I appreciate all the technical and financial support that's been offered. I've had a couple of offers to host it as well. So something will be sorted out. Until then, I'll leave it up and running for anyone to peruse.
Here's a follow up from Ning support regarding the Facebook issue.

Hi Anthony,

I just wanted to follow up with you and let you know that our Policy and Safety team contacted Facebook and found that our IP address, 208.82.16.68, was being blocked. This issue has now been resolved, so your members should not encounter this block again. There do appear to still be a handful of instances where links are still being blocked. This should clear up shortly, but if you continue to experience difficulty with links being flagged from your network, please let us know of a specific example that you're encountering this issue with, and we'll be happy to investigate further.

I've Tweeted & posted on Facebook about the site & both worked with no problems

Hmmm, I just tried uploading an animated avatar and discovered that they only come up as stills here. How Ironic because the old SMA could handle animated .gif files. Is there anything that can be done about that?

this from Ning:

Animated gifs can't be used as avatars on Ning right now. This is due to the way we process uploaded images and generate multiple sizes for them.

OK Thanks, I'll hang my hopes on the 'right now' part.

The main thing that bugs me about the new site is that there's a very simple feature missing here that was a staple on the old site  - the ability to see what's been posted in the past 24 hours, past week and past month. Without that feature, I feel like I need to hunt for new comments and topics that have been posted since the last time I was here.

I know I was very positive about this new site in the beginning but, as time goes on I find myself missing the structure of the old site more and more. It was much easier to navigate and know you had read everything that was of interest to you in every subject because you were able to more easily check 'what's new' since your last visit.

I hope this isn't the beginning of like when I gave up playing video games... they added more buttons and joysticks to the controller and the 'game' turned into a 'job' that I didn't want to play anymore for that very reason.

On the old SMA everything was on one screen in a very simple and straight forward way. The longer I spend here on the new site, the more I find it to be difficult to navigate and feel confident I've seen all the new postings. The main thing that's missing for me is the button to allow me to see everything that's been posted in the past 24 hours all at once.

^ yes, and the ability to Mark everything after you've read it so when you return it shows you only the threads with new messages.

Another factor I prefer about the old board is the smaller thread headings onthe Read New page - you can see like 25 threads all listed there on the one page, where as here you can only see what - 9 or 10 maybe?

That said - I have my bookmark for this site set to automatically take me to All Discussions with the option already set to Newest First. It still feels pretty clunky in comparison - I seem to always see the exact same threads listed in the same order whenever I get here - but maybe that's because those are the active ones.

But I suppose Ill get used to it, and hopefully things will start really rolling in here. In a way they already are and one good thing - lots of people are posting who didn't post on the old board.

I also used the Mark as Read all the time on the old board, so I could see which discussions had new posts since my last visit.   I didn't use Past 24 Hours or Read New, but seeing the icons in colour if there was a new post since I marked it did the same job of letting me know what was new and what I had already read.

The other thing I just noticed - when I click on a thread it starts with the first (oldest) page, so I think I've read it before, not always realising there are a couple more pages added since I last saw it.  Combine that with no highlighted icons for the unread posts, and I have no idea what I've already read.  I'm re-reading a lot, and missing some other topics completely.

I also noticed there seem to be a few new people who have come aboard at this new site, so that's good.

Not so good is the way any new activity shows up in the same central place, instead of in the specific area.  Like photos - so many are being posted,  photos quickly get buried by newer ones, even though they belong in a different section.  And I'm not so keen on how all blogs update on the same page, instead of only appearing if people want to go to a specific blog.  I might like to do a blog to follow progress on a new production for example, and if anyone wanted to follow it they would be welcome.  But I don't like my latest post on my blog pushing Anthony's latest post down the page, as if it was all one blog.  On the old site, I did a thread showing the props making for my Poe project - it was there if you wanted to see it, but it didn't display the text and photos in my latest post on the main page, competing with every other recent post on every topic, all in your face at once.  All you saw was that a new reply had been added to that thread.    So I wouldn't do a blog here on this site, I'd be happier with another site like Blogspot.

Thanks for these notes about the site.  I just turned off 'Detail View' on the Home Page, a cleaner, more condensed look.

I agree with you guys about the old board.  'Mark', 'Read New' and 'list topics from last 24 hours' were extremely useful to me as well. There are ways to hack this site and customize it.  I've changed and added a couple of things (emoticons for example) but there are some things I personally wouldn't feel comfortable doing...CSS Styles and coding and all that stuff.  I'd need to pay someone to do it.  I joined the Creators group at ning.com.  There is a lot of support for this site, unlike the old one, so I hope to keep refining the details here best I can.

----

edit: I turned Detail view back on but limited it to 100 characters instead of 500.  I wasn't liking the total lack of information.

I have to agree with you Ron, sometimes less is more.  Personally, while I appreciate what Anthony is trying to do, and understand some of the technical reasons for changing the site, I use the site for access to information, not as a social nexus.  The old site was admirably suited to that, and the new site feels awkward to me because of all the bells and whistles.  I would be perfectly content to have a no-frills bbs which allowed uploading of videos, in-comment links and animated avatars.

Thanks for the tip!  I am using it now.

I wonder if there is any way to just turn off the slideshow on the right side of the page.  It is incredibly distracting when watching a video

Hey Martin, 2 things that should help -
First I like to enlarge the site. On a Mac you do that by clicking the Command key and the + (plus sign) at the same time. Makes text much easier to read, enlarges pictures and videos - it simply makes the entire site bigger. You can click it several times and make it as big as you want (even to the point of pushing the right sidebar right off the edge if you want).

And when watching videos, click first on the little YouTube logo down in the lower right corner of the embedded video. That will take you through to YouTube where you can see the video fullscreen - no more distractions!
