Hi

I'm trying to make a rope that a puppet will hold and swing around like a lasoo, so I need to make something that is rigid and bendable in order to animate it. My thinking so far has been that doing something with aluminium wire is the way to go but its proving harder than I thought to make something that looks like rope.

I tried attaching sting to the wire and then paining the string but this looked terrible.

Has anyone got any good ideas?

Thanks

I haven't done this, but if I was going to, I'd think about smearing some glue on the animation wire and winding some button thread around it. Button thread is like cotton but thicker, so should give a better texture and be easier to handle. I'd get a hand drill, put the animation wire in the chuck, clamp the drill in a vice and get someone to hold the other end of the wire as I gradually fed the thread around it while I turned the drill handle.

This is all theory though, ha ha!, but it should work OK.

Instead of using aluminium wire you might use aluminium foil. Spray it with glue and cover it with cloth....

Aluminum wire wrapped with the color and texture of thread that you want. Glue with spray adhesive, pva, or contact cement. Painting it will ruin the texture.  I've done it a few times and it does work. You just have to be careful.

you tried different d. sizes of wire? if not, you should try 1mm Al wire, its moving very, very softly and easy to animate.

I've just tried twisting 3 strands of 0.7mm aluminium wire together, and they make a very passable rope, nice and malleable, about 2mm total diameter. The challenge then would be painting the metal, and I would go with some primer first before getting the colour.

You could also try floral wire that is already wrapped in cotton thread or fabric.
