Wow, very beautiful work.

Wow. Nice!

The hands are magnificent. What is this made of?

It is carved out of high density foam with chisels. I am influenced by Czech wood carved marionettes. My next project is actually a marionette.

The hands are made out if latex. Pretty standard.

While I like the look of this puppet, it is pretty much a failure as far as functionality goes. It is my first stop mo puppet. I learned a lot though. . .especially what not to do.

Brilliant!!! So expressive, even in still images! How was it a failure?

Is there wire in those shoulder straps so they can be animated?

Thanks for kind words guys. It is not a failure as a pretty piece of sculpture, but it is definitely a failure as a puppet. It is partly because of ignorance and partly just plain stupidity. Haha.

I love the puppets in Barta's films. So my method was to create physically carved pieces with armature joints, rather than casting over a skeleton. Stupidly, I was trying to be clever by using joints I cut off of cheap inspection mirrors. The puppet is substantial, so the joints are constantly falling from the weight and needing to be tightened. Also, the balls were breaking off. . .once the rod was fixed into the piece! To replace all of the joints, I would have destroy the thing.

It is very disheartening, but I would love to see this thing come to life. But there is no way of animating this thing without doing potential further damage. Oh well. Lesson learned. I am happy I finished and now it is time to move on to my next one.

It's a beautiful puppet, and I like that you can still see the joints. It would be amazing to animate, I am sure. It's a shame you say it's not as functional. But it looks great nonetheless.

Also your other work is amazing. Beautiful concept art. It's clear where the great design for this puppet came from.

I really like your blog of concept art. Hope you get to animate some puppets made from those beautiful drawings

Superb puppet design and sculpting!

Thanks for the kind words about my blog. I am actually a professional concept artist. I work in cg animated features, but I really wish I could work in stop motion. I did a short stint building props for an animated tv show, but it folded.

I am glad to have found a hobby that is different than my job. And also, to have found a hobby that only a few passionate people really appreciate.

And we're people of QUALITY.
