taking one frame at a time since 1999

Hi all,

I'm one of the developers of OpenToonz, a free and open source 2D animation program.  I recently overhauled the stop motion capabilities of the program.

Please test it out and let me know what works and what needs tweaked.  It supports webcams and Canon DSLR cameras.

The test version is only released for Windows right now, but we have also tested on Macs and it works too.

You can try it out here:

OpenToonz Stop Motion Test

Thanks,
Jeremy

Hi Jeremy

I'm interested in this software.

I downloaded the zip and extacted all files. There is no setup and executing directly opentoonz.exe causes an error: VCRUNTIME140_1.DLL missed.

downloaded version 1.4 from webpage and installed. It works but I don't know if it's the same you posted.

This version works. The program really looks amazing. I'm interested in both 2D animation and stop motion and it's wonder to have both in the same program. I'll try to learn the basics for handle it and do some tests.

Lot thanks for your explendid work.

Hello again

I tested the program a bit. It connect without problems with my canon EOS600D and can do adjusts and shot properly . I found two problems (may be cause I don't know how use the software).

1- The live view is slightly different in size (zoom) respect the last frame so cannot do "steptolive" process properly for animate with precission. I found that enabling the option SCAN&CLEANUP, CAMERA TEST the live view size autoadjust to match but I cannot lock this adjust so when change frame, appears with original size and automatch again. This produces a quick movement that don't let "steptolive" again. ¿is there any form to fix that?

2- The live view is very dark respect to last frame captured. ¿Any bright adjust for that?

Thanks again

Antonio

Sounds interesting.  I can't test it until you release a Mac version though, don't have a Windows computer any more.

Currently I use Dragonframe for capture, which I am happy with, but always looking out for something cheap or free I can recommend to animators on a budget. I use TV Paint for 2d animation and various effects.

I would be interested in a 2d animation program, since I can't run TVP on my iMac, it won't recognise the dongle, and one day my 2008 Mac Pro that I still use for TVP will give up the ghost.  And one program that does both capture and image editing would save me a couple of steps.   Does Opentoonz use bitmap or vector for 2d drawing?

I can see in the program 4 types of layer (here called levels):
Toonz vector level, Toonz raster level, Raster level, Scan level

First of them is vector, next two are bitmap and last is for scaning process.

You can stack levels of every type and work simultaneously in all of them. Really very interesting. I created a stopmotion level, do the shotting and create over it a vector level and hand draw on it.

Probably Jeremy can give more information.

Thanks, Jeremy. Now, liveview is same size and bright than last frame, so can do the steptolive perfectly.

Respect darkness, sadly there is no adjust in the camera for liveview bright. So all scene in animation process is darker  than final frames, so a bright control for program view would help a lot.

Really happy with this program. I'll continue testing and learning about it.

Antonio, that button will show images lined up with live view.  Enable this when you want live view images to line up with captured images.

I think that the camera has a setting for live view exposure compensation.

Thanks Antonio!

I also rely on brightening up the live view, usually have it all the way up at plus 4 in Dragonframe.  I get enough light for the final image from long exposures, 1/2 sec to 1 sec, so this is an important feature.  Don't know if it can be done in the camera with my 7d, only ever done it in a capture program.

Just like Nick I'm also a Mac user.. no pc.  otherwise I would probably be interested in having a look.. I also use DF to capture frames.. can't be absolutely certain but wasn't your program big back in 1990, I was 16 I went to an animation festival in Cardiff, professional people from all around the world there, it was the year Nightmare Before Xmas was released, and I'm sure this software was being promoted at that festival.... correct me if I'm so wrong...

This software sounds interesting that you can do both 2D and Stopmotion.. I want to dabble in 2D maybe if I can apply my time more to it.. but I am learning that it's this or that in real life.. we don't have enough resources to do it all.. some seem to.. I can't lol..

how do I get a copy of that TVPaint Nick.. they use that at the university I'm considering going to.. and it's for Mac right?

James.

Thanks, Jeremy!

Recently I got a pen display "Huion pro 16" and configured if for working with Opentoonz without problems. I'll continue learning the use of the program. As you said, it's not easy; is very different to other software but it's worth

Hey Jeremy,  good luck with all of this.. I don't know if I got time to test it anyway, have to see.. I'm just about getting use to DF now.. it took me a while.. but now I'm whizzing around doing what I need it to do.. I felt that was a bit of a steep learning curve for me.. but now it seems everything has settled.. I'm trying to learn 'Incremental Editor' on DF now.. new tool for me..  and still haven't got use to how they load movies and images in..   thanks for explaining.. when software lie Toonz is released at ' open source ' does that mean anyone can develop it into a new software like what your doing right?

Jeremy,   yeah thanks I agree..   arghhh I understand now.. it's great your giving more people out there a cheaper different option.. one of the ladies on my puppet fabrication course the other day couldn't afford DF she was asking is there any other cheaper options.. your definitely going to help a lot of people out there... that soun ds cool using your screen as a coloured light.. and the focus checking option, if I understand you properly, that's awesome.. it strains my eyes to hell trying to set the focus in DF cinematography window before starting the animation.. I wish they had an automatic checker on there.. that's an excellent idea...

and thanks for the quick education on open source..

Great! I wait impatiently!

I shot a little scene yesterday and all worked ok. I did test shots directly in animation and erased them after. A separate test shot line is a great idea.
