Hi,

I know it's a silly question but how do you color /pigment clay? Here down under, acces to high quality clay is very limited. Van Aken or Newplast are impossible to find and buying from ebay has some huge shping costs ( up to 30 times the price of 500 g of clay). I found a good manufacturer of clay, the problem is they make only white clay. Hence the question... what pigments and/or inks i can use to give color to white clay? I am not talking about air dry or polymer clay. I am talking about non hardening oil clay which can be used for stop motion.

Thank you for your help.

Old post here. Van Aken Plastalina mixes better than I thought. I was able to change yellows with my latest project just this week. In my Shrek Sopranos ani, I changed Shrek's color in post. Skin that cat;-)

I found this video very informative -

"The clay in stop motion animation at ardman studios"

it's a youtube upload u'll have to search for it - because i can't seem to figure out how to paste the address/link here

also i once saw a clip where a guy melted some coloured hard oil chalks into his clay - the cheapest once you can get as a kid - remember ?! comes in primary colours

and then the guy just mix 3 yellow one red and half a blue stick or other proportion to obtain the colour he mixed the last time

these colour sticks are very hard compared with pastels which are very greasy and may soften your clay.

get square ones without paper wrapping, then it's for sure not the soft pastels.
