Does anybody know where I can get some silicone for making stop motion puppets? Also, what is another way to make stop motion puppets without casting or molding?

Smooth-On is a popular source not just for silicone, but all sorts of casting materials (EcoFlex 00-30 is great for puppets).

So far as other puppet-making techniques go, check out the SMA Stop Motion Handbook; there are a couple of different pieces on puppet build-up methods there.

Great, it seems like the distribute world-wide, we got one here in Italy as well, will check it out! didn't know about it, thanks for sharing!

How will I cast my puppets in this ecoflex 30

This is just making the head, for a puppet where most of the body was covered in clothes.    But same thing really, if you need to cast the whole body - you sculpt the creature, make a plaster mould, then cast in silicone with the armature inside the mould.    I used Platsil Gel-10 on this one, but the mixing process is exactly the same for Ecoflex 00-30.  Sometimes I use both - Platsil to paint the skin on, because it is slightly thicker and builds up a thickness of skin better (and because I had some left), then fill it with Ecoflex 00-30 because it is a little bit thinner and pours better.

If you post a photo of your puppet sculpture, we can see how the best way would be to make the mould and cast it.

So ecoflex 00-30 instead of platsil gel 10?

Yes, it's softer so the puppet will bend more easily.

i make stop motion puppets out of found wood.  i basically float it on the armature. if anyone is interested i can show you how.

Great looking puppets Darren! (I like your Thoth, especially.)  Looks like you mostly do marionettes, but that method works for stop-motion puppets too.   In this thread Bobby was asking specifically about casting silicone puppets, but I like seeing different materials used.  Materials that look like themselves, rather than trying to simulate flesh, can be really effective.   Not everything has to be rubbery.

Thanks Nick.  i started with marionettes and am now doing stop motion.  They are different in that the marionettes do not have an internal armature. i like stop motion better because it allows me more control of movement.
