taking one frame at a time since 1999

Hi there,

I'm looking to animate a Himalayan salt lamp crumbling and was wondering if anyone has any ideas for materials I could use to build a mock (but realistic looking) lamp I could break apart? Ideally, it would be something lightweight and semi-transparent??

Cheers, Georgia :-))

I had to Google salt lamp to see what it looked like. My first impression was wax, though that might not be considered lightweight enough for your needs.

Hi Dave,

Yes, I was thinking wax or soap though I don't know if they'll look matte enough on camera. Will definitely give it a try though thanks for the feedback :-)

Just wondering if sugar might do the job. You could experiment by adding drops of food colouring perhaps or cooking it until it caramelizes. Then you could get it into a lump while it is still molten. You might then be able to nibble away bits of it with some pliers or a knife each frame? ....Thinking aloud, so I have no idea if it will work. But the materials are cheap and readily available!

Another possible material is gelatine. If you use the stuff in sachets not the flavoured blocks and add a little glycerine to it then a tiny amount of water and cook it in a microwave you should end up with a very firm partially translucent material and you could add some food colouring to give it the orange/yellow tint. BUT please beware that the gelatine will get extremely hot and can cause severe skin burns, so handle it with great care! Increasing the glycerine amount to about 50/50 would give a more flexible material, but you may not want that.

A no-cook possibility for gelatine would be one of those Haribo type sweets. Icing sugar is good for matting it down, and would work on wax as well.

Experiment, and show us your results! Good luck!

Hi Simon,

Brilliant ideas, thank you! Yes, I'll take these into account and look forward to seeing how the experiments turn out - icing sugars a good call for the matte issue

soap will do or you can use a gelatin powder i think that will give the semi trasparent look more real salt lamp
