Hi all,

Are there any good short stop motion animation courses anyone can recommend in the UK?

Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

Cheers,

Rob.

This is from Stoopid Buddy Stoodios, the people who do Robot Chicken.

This is from the Chiodo Brothers, it's a series of several videos detailing the various stages of production.

I have them both, and they each have their strengths. Worth looking into! Good luck.

Thanks Dawn! :)

I'm also looking for some practical training, like a tutor-led weekend/week long hands-on training.

Cheers,

Rob.

Hi Rob. I am no authority but people seem to like hanging around here at the farm.

I have interns on and off. Right now a couple of Uni students, last year a German trainee no a 6 months apprenticeship via the "Leonardo Da vinci" program

I don't run formal courses but if you want to get some practice just get in touch.

I am in South Wales.  gus@gustavoarteaga.com

Thank you for your reply Gustavo. :) I've emailed you.

If you can swing it and are in Oregon, Will Vinton's stop motion class is fantastic. As far as online courses, Stoopid Buddy's was competent and crammed a lot of great info and examples into its run time. Can't comment on others, as I have no experience with them but the caliber of talent in the people teaching them is at the top in the business.

Cheers Don.

Hey, there is a very good 3 month character animation course in collaboration with Aardman and the NFTS in Bristol, at Aardman. It's pretty expensive though, and very specifically just animating, not a beginner course. But as I don't know what exactly you are looking for I thought I'd mention.  People I know who have done the course have ended up working as animators for studios straight after completing the training. There've also been short courses/workshops through the BFI Second lights lab aimed at young people, providing specific skill training. I've had the opportunity to take part in a 3 day model making course through that a few years ago, entirely for free! I'm not sure if/what may be running now but may be worth checking out.
There used to be a 3 month program and other short courses over summer at the Bristol school of Animation, but I believe that's not happening anymore...

Cheers Roos! :) I'm just starting out, so I'm getting up to speed first with the basics first, but I'll definitely look into those options.

Moonbird looks lovely btw!

Rob,

so many good choices there, I'm going to look into that Roos sounds like good connections there with that course for those who are ready for it... but as you say expensive.. it seems that's what studios are doing now getting us who aspire to work there to pay for our own training, sort of a pre-casting / recruitment process for them.. sneeky clever lol..

Rob as you probably already know now there are lots of options for online courses, they seem to be popping up everywhere, you even have the likes of Laika animator Kevin Parry now doing online animation course in basics - intermediate level -

https://motiondesign.school/products/stop-motion-with-kevin-parry?u...

you should definitely consider this guy he is awesome.. and doing really cool stuff.. a mate of mine is doing it he's loving it, and I'm considering it but it's on sale now for around £250 -

But I'm already doing too many courses now lol.. but a Laika animator teaching you.. how cool is that.. and there's FB community that goes with the course..

but it's not in person NO .. the only one I know of who does weekend courses in person, although your probably not going to have that right now because of the lockdown, not sure what's happening in England though, they lifted some of the social restrictions haven't they.. I'm in South Wales.. we still in lockdown.. She's based in LONDON, she does puppet fabrication / set building courses and stop motion weekends in person but at the moment all online.. I did one of her puppet courses online recently.. she is doing a cheaper - one day - I think - lip sync & DF - course soon.. if you want to get in touch write her:

I use this IG link above to contact here..

I'm if you want an online option, I'm  doing basic animation and other courses with:

if your interested check out his animation course:

if you are going down the online route, which looks likely everyone will be:

Definitely consider this online school - I've had lots of chats with him on FB, Dale Hayward & Sylvie Trouve, they married couple do this school.. she worked on the movie:  The Little Prince:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q5cJ4MWt3ZQ

I love what he was saying about the feedback loop that you need that's missing on lots of online courses.. they have a real vision to help animators grow, this is definitely a person of understanding.. I had a great conversation with him about the pattern of online education nowadays he called it "passive money"  where they just design the course, get it out there, and you get on with it, with limited oportunities for interaction, although there is plenty of that online anyway, but not much integration..people share but do they care - enough!   people are prepared to share to a point, but they are not prepared to give themselves entirely to you, fair enough for artists or creatives in general who are trying to do their own thing and get it out there.. me included.. although I'm in the trenches right now lol.. but teachers should be there, and too many people value personal freedom now.. so there's very little integration going on, that's my view anyway.. I guess if I was in university I would get more integration, because everyone is physically in the same location, although saying that it wouldn't suprise me if people are distant even in university.. where's the humanity gone.. owe well I guess we all just doing our own thing now but in a shared space... it's all good.. whatever you decided to do Rob - good luck finding the right fit for you.. it is difficult.. even though there's much much more choices now, it doesn't make it any easier to know which one is the right one for you... life is full of risk, calculated risk is the best you can go for..

they made this really nice movie:

another provider of online:

I can see why your looking for "I'm also looking for some practical training, like a tutor-led weekend/week long hands-on training."   I feel saturated already looking at all these lol...

forgot to say not forget this amazing school:

I have wrote to them just now to ask what animation - basic to intermediate - level course material they provide

i recommend the programme 'secrets of british animation' on bbc iplayer. A great 'punkrock' intro to the diy ethic.
