The SMA Archive is now LIVE!

In 2012, StopMotionAnimation.com was a website that was sinking fast. It was limping along with old message board software that was purchased from an eventually abandoned and unsupported company; DCScripts. I remember occasionally getting messages saying "The site is down, can you fix it?!". I had no idea how but eventually sorted out each emergency. The site was huge and costly. All this got me thinking that something had to be done. Either completely shut down the site, or start over. Both scenarios meant losing all the old information stored in the cryptic codes embedded into DCScripts' clunky out-dated software.

A million thanks and praises go Paul J. McConnochie and his desire to sort thru mountains of data and images to create a new resource for everyone to enjoy. So, here it is, all the old discussions presented in a new format, risen from the ashes!

Hi guys,

I've run into a problem with the database for the old SMA site. The company that provides the hosting for my website made changes to their allowance tiers a while back, which places (what I think is an entirely arbitrary) limit on the size of database file that can be uploaded to the site.

I approached them asking them to upload the database file for me (they've done it before), but they refused unless I pay a £100 support fee.

Obviously, that is an absolute joke. There's no way I'm paying them £100 to upload a file to a server. It take about two minutes to do that. So, the price is simple extortion.

This all actually happened a while back (before Covid-19 etc), so I have to apologise for dropping the ball in the meantime.

I've just checked with them, and they've made yet another change, which allows me to unlock that artificial limit on database uploads by upgrading my account to a higher level. That only costs another £2.50 a month - Much more reasonable. So, I'm going to do that.

Once it is all set up and I've got the file uploaded, I'll let you know.

Thank you for the update Paul and all the work you've put into preserving the SMA Archive!

No problem.

I should clarify from my previous comment, where I said "this all happened before covid-19". What I meant was that the host company altered their system to put a limit on database uploads before covid-19 (I think some time in the middle of last year). So, when I came to look at getting it uploaded in April, I ran into this problem. And, I then dropped the ball on finding a solution until today.

I've now upgraded the hosting service - I'm just waiting on confirmation. So, the archive should be back online in the next day or two (allowing for any tweaks I have to make to the code).

Great news. Once you're happy with everything, send me the link and I'll attach it to the Menu Bar.

Happy to say, the SMA archive is back up and running!

I've got some plans to finesse it :

+ Adding pagination to the various boards.
+ Adding pagination to the search results.
+ Improving the search bar some more.
+ Making the links inside posts functional.

I'm not sure exactly when I'll get round to these things, but they are on the cards. And, I'm determined not to let the archive go offline again!

Enjoy!

Huge thanks to Paul for resuscitating the SMA Archive! It's up and breathing again! You can access the link from the Menu Bar thru the Message Board drop down list.

The Archive contains posts by none other than the legendary Jim Danforth. Yes he used to hang out here back in the day, providing useful advice and recounting past projects. Buried Treasure! Here is an example of when he chimed in to help out someone with their project: http://www.vortex42studios.com/sma/index.php?archive=forum&keyw...

Here's a good quote I found in the Archive from Jim Danforth:

If I listed all my worst shots (isn't that an oxymoron), it would crash Anthony's server. Actually, I think the 'worst' shot is a less-than-satisfactory shot from which one has learned nothing. Jim

Woot! This is great news and congrats on finishing the project :D

This is so cool. I just did some browsing and found an old post I made about a problem with foam latex. Everyone here was so helpful! I owe a lot to this community. Thank you!
