Software which does remote camera with DSLRs and puts images into a timeline

Hi everyone,

I'm pretty new to stop motion but have made a few movies using imovie and Windows Movie Maker. I have a DSLR - Canon EOS 1100D - and want to find some software which is a bit more specialist than the free stuff mentioned above.

I would like it to do remote capture with my camera so I can take pictures, they go straight onto the timeline. I use a mac and have tried istopmotion, however my camera doesn't work with their remote capture and I have to work "blind" (take pictures then import them). Dragonframe does what I want however it's $300, which I can;t really justify. Plus I live in the UK so I'm sure something annoying will happen like I have to pay an extra £15 on customs charges when they ship the keypad from the States.

Is there any other mac software out there which does what I want that anyone can recommend. Frame Thief does not sound too appealing as there is no support and it seems the creators have dumped the software.

Thanks in advance for your help,

Josh

Yor best off with dragonframe (you know $300 is about £180) but if you want cheaper you try "pro animate" for about £50.

There's also Animator HD who say you can use a windows conversion software called "Fusion 5" http://www.vmware.com/products/fusion/overview.html but then maybe that would work with "stopmotion pro" and if your a student you might be able to get a 35% discount on that - go for the "action HD" version at about £130 (before discount).

Dude get Dragon. I can't believe it's just $300. Try the free demo and i bet you'll spring for it like i did. The lip syncing application is so nice and easy and it works so smooth. Just make sure your camera has live view. Do the demo! but again you'll most likely be editing your audio and final cut on another NLE. If you are a student adobe has amazing deals. Creative Suite 6 for $450 that would be about $1,800 for anyone else. I know! money money money! Sucks but what can you do?

Thanks for your advice. I downloaded the demo of dragon and will see how it goes, not sure I can justify £190 on it though as it is a hobby and not my full time job. I'll also check out Pro Animate. IT looks like it does what I want but for much cheaper!

Cheers guys, I'll let you know how I get on

I've tried Dragonframe 3 and it is really good. The demo only allows 50 frames per take though which is incredibly limiting. I'm working at 15fps so that's 3 second worth of footage.

Are there any UK people who have ordered it from the USA? I'm never comfortable ordering things from abroad.

There's no problem with ordering it - the only thing you need shipped to you is the controller pad - you already have the software. What you get when you pay for it is the activation key that removes the demo limitations. Unless you're old fashioned and want it on a piece of plastic. There's no need to have software on a disc - just back it up to an external hard drive and make sure to write down your activation key and save it also on backup (multiple backup if possible). If you suffer a crash you can always re-download the software from Dragonframe (if not from your backup copy) and use your activation key to re-activate it.

We get orders from the UK probably every day. There doesn't seem to be any problem with people getting the keypad.

Dragonframe is a incredible piece of software for the price . Specially if you want to get into motion control. Also i have Nikon cameras if i was to buy Nikons camera control it would cost me £150 to do exactly what Dragonframes cinematography window does .

Down side the British customs and excise held my keypad for ransom until i paid £15 . Not Dragons fault but worth baring in mind .
