taking one frame at a time since 1999

Stopmo Jam 2 is all about a Single Character running, hopping, skipping, dancing anything except walking. Start your animation already in motion. I will cut everyone's animation together in one big Action Jam.

Character: Can be human, animal, bug, robot, a sack of flour, a jellybean. The important thing is, give your character personality and weight. You can make your character do a flip, a spin, while running if you want, just as long as they are facing screen right by the end of your animation.

Composition: Character is running in place. On your first and last frame, your character must be facing screen right. (for cutting) See my simple animated Sample Run here.  Keep the bulk of your character within the White Square as much as possible.

Background: Can be any color, moving or static, realistic or stylized. For added cool factor, animate some objects going by in the foreground and/or background such as trees, a building, a person waving. Commonly known as a Fake Traveling Shot, these elements must move thru frame traveling from right to left in order for your shot to work correctly. See above video.

Important Technical Requirements

Shot Length: 10 seconds maximum

Frame Rate: 24 fps

Aspect Ratio: 1920 x 1080

Finished Animation: export to Quicktime (H264 is good)

Puppets can be made of clay, paper, foam, wire, sand, whichever materials you can utilize to create your design but it must be stop motion animated. Sorry no LEGOs, action figures, toys, or store bought items are allowed UNLESS it is modified (painted, covered with paper or clay, etc). The goal is to make a hand-made experimental film. Stop motion puppets, 2d cutouts, sand, painting, pixelation, all hand-made animation techniques allowed.

No Music or Sound fx. Music will be added later.

Content must be ok for kids to watch. I reserve the right not to include your animation if it doesn't fit into these guidelines. If you have any questions, please contact me.

DEADLINE is AUGUST 15, 2017. (extended from June 30)

Post questions below and I'll get back to you asap.

I am in the closing days of another project but I will split time so I can meet both deadlines. I will be making an all new puppet and today I just ordered a used lens and adapter along with a Zoom H1 digital recorder(for future projects).

Odds are I will miss both my deadlines but I am in for now. Animatic is almost done.

As hand-made as possible but ok to cover an armature.

hey guys.  good luck to everyone doing stopmo jam 2...

I been doing tests on lighting and timing etc...I done a run cycle on one of those ikea puppets Dave mentioned...it took me 4xhrs to do 10xseconds using  Eadweard muybridge running man as a reference to work from off youtube... and even though it came out quite smooth for a first attempt and I was impressed but it presented some issues.  It is on a stand which is a problem, the joints are not very well articulated...I had to use wire to hold the leg and arm right back on certain frames...because the wooden armature is not very well designed or limited to move...so I dont think I am going to do anymore myself with it.  I am looking to buy an armature.

Just to clear this up we are allowed to use bought armatures yes?  as long as they are modified right?    ....although I was hoping to use the armature look as it suits the robot theme...I am considering forking out and buying the alpha armature that Julian Clarke Studios make...it looks very much like a transformer robot look to it...I think...

The character can be a worm, or a horse or a human, or a rock. I want people to get creative! The white box is a general area to aim for. Not necessary to have the character enter or exit frame. Just keep the animation happening in the center of the screen.

I will update the sample when I get a free moment. It was just something I quickly threw together from old test footage to get the point across.

Hi Anthony,

Couple of questions...

Should the character be bipedal?

Also, I downloaded your animated sample run and noticed it is not 1920 x 1080 aspect. Just wondering how to keep consistency with the white box guide? I have imported your file into After Effects and 'fit to height' at the moment. Would that work for you?

Thanks!

I'd like to participate in this after seeing the first one. I need a bit of clarification though. My understanding is the first frame needs to have the character facing the right side of the screen. Then it can do a twirl or anything. Final frame must have it standing still and facing the right side of the screen? Or is it the twirling motion can continue as long as it is facing the right side mid twirl?

You are correct except character should not be standing still at the end. Make sure it is facing screen right, moving in place. This is so that I can cut multiple shots together.

I am going to extend the deadline to August 15, 2107 due to my work schedule. This will give everyone more time and I'll be able to focus on editing everything together.

Since I am the king of all procrastinators I have to say I am excited for the extension.

Is this still going on? I'm a bit late as I see these comment are from last month but I want to join also I never done stop motion before just being doing research for months I'll most likely do cutout animation as it's the cheapest. I'm in

Deadline is August 15, so you still have time.   I haven't started yet either.

I haven´t started mine either. I am glad there is still time up to August.

I got my puppet sculpted and I am casting the parts in resin. He is a skeleton that I will join the bones together with wire. So far so good but this is the only thing I have accomplished.

Only 35 days until the deadline.

Dress rehearsal - should be able to shoot this weekend!
