taking one frame at a time since 1999

Has anyone had luck with the older version of Stopmotion Pro v5 working with windows 10?

I am having all kinds of issues getting it to run.  I have finally gotten the things together with just days to make my Stopmo Jam piece and now the software doesn't work. :(

It lags/locks up and when I close it I get an error message, I will try to attach the picture of the error.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Chris

Ouch!  Tough to run into that at this late stage!

After SMP 5 there was SMP 6 and 6.5, before the current version Eclipse, so 5 may just be too old to be compatible with Windows 10.  Don't know, the last Windows I ran was XP.  You could go to the Stop Motion Pro site and ask Support there.  Or download a trial of SMP Eclipse and see if that works for you.

I had issues with version 7.5, was told by StopMoPro that I had to upgrade to newest version to use on Windows 10, which I can't afford. Luckily I have an older version of Windows installed on my desktop, so I am in the process of moving that into my studio to use.

I was able to slide the error message out of the way on my laptop and capture frames, but no other features worked, like onion skinning. All in all, Windows 10 has been a nightmare...

I realize the version I have is old, but hey, so am I.  Okay anyway, I tried to run it on an older PC with windows 7 but when I attempted to get an unlock it said I had it on too many computers. LOL.  The upgrade to eclipse is $148 at which point I really have to think if it is worth it or if I hold off and make the jump to Dragonframe at some point in the future when i will actually spend time using it.

Meanwhile, anyone know of any freeware that would work for this?  Sadly all I ever used was stopmotion pro and even then I never used it enough to justify paying for it again.

I looked up the freebie Helium Frog, but the first hit I got has to do with difficulties running it under Windows 10:  http://www.heliumfrog.com/Helium_Frog/helium_frog_help/heliumfroghe...

It says Windows have removed a few files in 10 that were needed for it to work.  Probably the same with other framegrabbers.  There is a link to a work-around there, but when I click on it, it appears to be a work-around for using it with Windows 8.

All the other free framegrabbers I have heard of are a good deal older, and are even less likely to work under Win10.  I dumped windows when 7 came out,  kept using XP until my old Pentium 4 died, then moved over to Macs.  I'm now using Dragonframe, not because it is better than SMP, but because SMP doesn't have a native Mac OSX version yet.

Another work around, is to use an iPhone or iPad  (or Android device) with the free app Stop Motion Studio.  It works with the internal camera, not a DSLR, but you could use it to gauge your animation, while shooting it with your camera at the same time, saved on the memory card.  I used to do that with my 16mm Bolex, and a vhs-c camera next to it to use with the framegrabber.  Not quite as good as seeing through the same lens, but a hell of a lot better than shooting blind.  Ideally you would have a cable remote release for your camera so you don't touch it.  Or you could just shoot it on the iPad/iPhone/Android Phone with Stop Motion Studio.  It does let you lock off the exposure, focus, and white balance, so they stay the same, and was quite usable.  I did a demo of using Stop Motion Studio on my iPad 3, shooting 1920 x 1080 HD, here:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pCldXEMOCLM

I got the "too many computers" comment too, but if you email Stop Motion Pro support and explain the issue, they will "reset" your serial number so you can reinstall.
