Just came back from seeing it! Beautifully done and the subtle movements of the characters were amazing. Have to agree with Marnik that Snatcher is particularly fun to watch. Laika's films just keep inspiring me to push a little harder.

Fantastic film. The bar has been raised, forever.

What an impressive piece of work!

I'd love to see Laika tackle The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. Could you imagine how spectacular that would be?

Saw it this weekend ... wow ... the Laika folks get better and better at it with each new film.

I keep wondering just what they could accomplish in a "dynamation" type movie with live actors and stopmo.

It could happen ;-)

... jbd

Finally saw it, and was pleasantly surprised. I don't think it was as good as ParaNorman, but it had some fantastic things going for it.

The animation was terrific, although curiously subdued (except for the over the top villain, whose performance matched Ben Kingsley's over the top vocals). The trolls were the best part, with some delightful bits of interaction.

The only thing that bugged me was the thing that Laika seems so up about - the 3D printed replacement faces. Technically they were remarkable - fantastic even - but I thought they gave the puppets a stiffness that somewhat negated the expressiveness of the faces themselves. This was particularly apparent on the Lord Portley-Rind figure, possibly because the wonderful animation of his mustache was so fluid.

But hey! The dance sequence! Yowza! And the timing of the end gag made the whole movie. I laughed hysterically.

Oh, and the brief "behind the scenes" bit of philosophy as the credits roll was worth the price of admission.

Bought myself "The art of the Boxtrolls" book yesterday and it is also brilliant, would thoroughly recommend!

Ooh, didn't know there was a book out... Don't think I will find it in bookshops in Melbourne, might have to look on Amazon.

I heard about the book only last night. Ta for jogging my memory, Marnik, and for your recommendation. I'll place an order right now. :)

Cheers,
Damien

If you liked the film then you'll love it, but I must point out that it's much more orientated towards pre-production and design stages rather than physical building and animating of puppets and sets etc. It's not a complaint as I love the design stuff, just pointing it out!

Ooh, I need to get this!

Would be truly believable! After seeing Paranorman, I would believe that they could do that!
