After bringing my stop-motion fable to festivals for the past year and a half, it's finally available to watch online- for a fee ($4 SD/ $6 HD). More on that below.

TRAILER:

As independent stop-motion filmmakers, there are more options than ever right now to find funding for our projects. Since the majority of the budget for this film came from my pocket, I've been very fortunate to partner with The National Film Board of Canada for distribution, which means that I share in the profits if you choose to buy the film online.

I'm happy to be releasing my film like this, instead of putting it out for free. I feel like there's been a devaluation of short films, and that it's in the hands of us, the filmmakers, to take control of that.

I'm curious to know what everyone here thinks about paying to see short films. Should they all be free?

Hi Evan, good on you and congrats on your film. I haven't taken a look at the full film but will do so. Our first stop motion animated film Skeleton Girl is online because we received funding through Bravo! FACT (they had non-exclusive first window broadcast rights) and were part of CBC's Short Film Face Off last year (so also online now). That being said, I'm putting together a Blu-ray/DVD Collector's Edition of the 2D version that has exclusive behind the scenes footage and the 3D trailer (we also shot it in stereoscopic 3D - the first film in Canada to combine that and stop motion); the plan is to package it with anaglyph glasses. I am in discussions with others on the 3D distribution side to try and reach a wider audience and make some money. Long story short, I think it's good you're trying to monetize the work you've done. Keep us updated on how it goes. Do you have other stop motion films planned? We're at work on our next one as part of an anthology; you can find more about Skeleton Girl (the first in the series) at www.skeleton-girl.com. And thanks for the Cuppa Coffee link, just checked them out! Cheers, Becky

I think you are right, we don't value what we get for free as much.  Love the 3d stopmo part of the animation at the start of that, looks fantastic!

Just watched the film, bought the HD version and really enjoyed it. Congrats all round, all elements were of a really high standard. I feel no hesitations paying a small fee such as this for a short film which I can learn from. I think if we all could go down this route it would be better in the long run for all of us. On the other hand you want as many people as possible to watch your film and I guess a fee may put off a lot of people. Either way, you have a great little short film there, thank you for sharing it,

All the best,

Paul
