What are you favorite Pre-CGI stopmotion creatures from Film?

When younger movie goers think of stop-motion they think of Clay-Mation cartoons. However though before CGI Existed, cartoons were not the only place where stop-motion was used. Back in the day, film-makers like Ray Harryhausen, Willis O'Brien, and Dennis Muren used stop-motion to create creature effects for movies that were mainly live-action. I'd like you guys to post your top 10 stop-motion creature effects in film!

  1. The Cyclops from The 7th Voyage of Sinbad (1958)
  2. King Kong (1933)
  3. Skeleton warriors from The 7th Voyage of Sinbad (1958) and Jason & The Argonauts (1963)
  4. Mighty Joe Young (1949)
  5. Rhedosaurus from The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms (1953)
  6. Ymir from 20 Million Miles To Earth (1957)
  7. The two giants from Jack the Giant Killer (1962) - guilty pleasure lol
  8. Ray H's T-Rex from Evolution of the World (1938)
  9. Allosaurus from One Million Years B.C. (1966)
  10. Calibos from Clash of the Titans

A great list Angus!  Can't argue with any of those.  I'd definitely put your top three in my list, but  my top 5 might be Cyclops, Kong, Talos at no. 3, then Skeletons and Joe.   Ymir can stay at no. 6.

I'd probably put Jim Danforth's mother and baby dinosaurs from WDRTE ahead of the giants from Jack.   Kali and the homunculus from Golden Voyage are favourites too.

It would be too easy to fill the top 10 places with Obie and Ray, but I'd like to find room for a couple of later stopmo creatures as well.  Vermithrax (Dragonslayer 1981) needs to get in there somewhere.  And I've always had a soft spot for the overweight, drunk T-Rex (Caveman 1981).

I'll see those lists and raise you...

a Garthok from Coneheads and

a Demon Lord from The Gate.

Thanks Nick, I haven't watched WDRTE, but I have seen clips of that Dinosaur and it looks amazing! Forgot about that one. I also saw a sequence with giant crabs which looked pretty cool. Danforth's monsters were pretty fantastic, though I prefer Ray personally.
