taking one frame at a time since 1999

Hi everyone,

I just watched “Mighty Joe Young” with my eight-year-old daughter who was totally INTO it. She yelled encouragement every time Joe got into trouble (I suspect she wishes her best friend was also a giant gorilla). I was wondering if anyone had recommendations for other O’Brien films that are not King Kong (she’s seen that and loved it too).

Have y'all watched "Son of Kong"?

I haven’t yet. Is it any good?

Other films that O'Brien did effects and animation for -

1. The Lost World, a 1925 silent film.  Best for film buffs probably, I like it but pacing and acting in the silent era are quite different.

After Kong, the sequel Son of Kong.  Rushed a bit, not quite in the same league, though the gorilla is sympathetic and it has its moments.  Mighty Joe is an improvement on it.

The Black Scorpion and The Giant Behemoth are low-budget 50's giant monster movies that Obie did effects for.  Some good work despite the limitations.  Ray Harryhausen's Beast from 20.000 Fathoms is another dino on the loose somewhat similar to Behemoth, and probably a bit better.

Ray's Ymir in 20 million Miles To Earth has more personality than the giant reptiles and bugs.   Like Joe he is hard done by, and gets the sympathy of the audience despite stomping around Rome.  It is available for streaming in various places, including Tubi for free in my country.

Obie's last work was some minor animation effects on It's a Mad Mad World, around 1960 I think.  Lost World and the 3 gorilla pics remain his major oeuvre.  He had many more ideas that never got made, like War Eagles.  One of them, Valley of Gwangi, was made later by Ray Harryhausen.

Thank you for the recommendations. I appreciate it.

I'd think Son of Kong is the most appealing to a 8 year old.

I would also recommend the remake of 'might joe young'. Not stop-mo, but a very impressive animatronic ape (With just a little cg augmentation.) Far superior to the peter jackson 'king kong'.

You cant go wrong with TNBC (The Nightmare Before Christmas /1993) !  Im 64, a lifetime fan of SMA (Stop-Motion Animation) Cinema, especially  'Classic Stop-Motion Cinema' (SMA Category-1), have 'seen it all' in SMA, and still consider TNBC as the GREATEST stop-mo puppet film in 'Stop-Motion Puppet Cinema' (SMA Category-2).  To me, films like "KING KONG" (1933) and Ray Harryhausen's films are all SMA Cat-1.  Technically, all SMA 'models' are "puppets", but i (and most Cat-1 fans) prefer to ID these higher-detailed/non-comedic creature-figures as 'models', or 'ani-models'.
