taking one frame at a time since 1999

Hey guys, I'm trying find out where to buy (or how to make) the little rack and pinion systems used for additional rigging when the feet aren't tied down. Like the picture bellow from BoxTrolls (highlighted in red boxes)I've heard them called Winder Rigs, I've also know that there are some tools used in optical equipment called Rack and Pinion Linear Translation Stages. But I can't find any info on how to build one where where to buy one like the one in the picture above. All the ones I can find are little platforms that usually move a little less than 4cm.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

This might be a stupid question, but why two pinions?

The first prototype I built had just one gear; that had some issues.  With two gears, the rack is kept straight inside the case; two gears prevent it from rotating around either one, and either getting the teeth jammed on the case, or uneven pressure between the back of the rack and the base of the case adding a ton of friction.

If the rack was riding on a couple of bearings near either end of the channel, I could see single gear in the middle holding it straight with minimal friction, but that hardware gets pricey fast.

Posted another thread about my updated winder design, looking for beta testers.  Anyone interested?

It looks like kinetic armatures are making something along these lines.  It's not out yet though.  I could sure use one in the coming week or two ... shame it isn't out yet.  http://www.kineticarmatures.com/inicio/allproducts#

they show an XYZ winder at Laika, which seems to have a small leadscrew for one axis. It is used later in the video on set.

Thanks for the plug, Kevin!

I've got a couple of Thomas' winders, and can confirm that they are an excellent piece of kit, solidly made and should last well.
