Winders are really simple, versatile rigging tools, which give stop motion animators easy, precise control over linear motion. They're also remarkably difficult for the average animator to obtain.  You seen them all the time in BTS stills from big studios, but the machined mechanisms are beyond the budget of most enthusiasts and independent artists.

I'd like to change that. I've been using this design (in one iteration or another) for the past several months, and it's had a huge impact on my ability to animate precise motion.  I'd love to see that available for everyone, so I'm making these 3D printed rigs available through a new website, QuantumCat Winders. Not only can you buy them ready-made (along with various modular accessories to help interface with other rigs), but I've posted the STL files so those of you with 3D printers can produce the main components yourselves.

I've used it fully supporting puppets up to half a pound -- at that weight, though, approaching full extension on the 12" racks becomes unstable, so I'd recommend sticking to stuff lighter than that unless you have the puppet's weight supported otherwise, and are just using the winders to fine-tune its posing.

They also can hold larger puppets using other rigging gear, such as a c-stand:

I just wanted to say how cool these are.  I bought three and was able to rig it up so that I have a 3 axis winder.  I have been wanting to post pictures and even an animation test, but I am having to move internationally right now, so no can do.  Definitely a great product though and can't wait to get animating with mine.

I'll second Adam on that. It's a nicely made piece of kit, and should last a long time. Very glad to have purchased a double unit as it's pretty versatile in this mode.

Thanks, guys!

I'm super excited to see how your 3-axis rig works, Adam!  I've been afraid to push it that far; the third axis introduces some funny torsion, and I haven't yet worked out a good way to support that.  Maybe it isn't actually as stressful as I imagined, though.  In any case, best of luck with the move!
