"Hey, As I was perusing the site and saw your question, I thought I'd get Nick (my camera guy) to add to the discussion:   If what you mean is where can I find a background after I have it keyed out. There is lots of stock photos for…"

"Good luck with your shoot! One thing I noticed, you had a fairly shallow depth of field in a couple of those stills, so that one character was in focus and the other a bit soft.  That works against the sense of large scale, making it look…"

"Hey Nick, I am starting animation today - so a comment like that really helped give me a boost. Thanks again. I prefer background paintings overall - but yes, we needed more options. We may make another piece of land to further the sense of…"

"Characters are looking great!  Set looks good already.  It's similar how I used to do outdoor sets, with a gap behind the main set for the animator to get in, then a more distant bit of ground behind that.  I usually blended it…"

Test shots for new short

After I finished my 4th year thesis film at Ryerson University, I was approached by a filmmaker to bring his idea to life via stop motion animation. Months later, we are finally seeing the results. Here, I would like to share with you some very early tests shots we took to see how the characters and backgrounds looked on camera and figure out the overall film. PLEASE NOTE: the sets and backgrounds are not finished yet. The little girl will have hair, I promise. …See More

"Great solution! I didn't realize that the hairdryer got hot enough to cure the polymer clay.  Problem-solving like that makes stop-motion that much more magical."

"Thanks Adam!  And no, I did not bake the resin head with the sculpey. I knew it could not take the heat. You're going to laugh when I tell you I dried them with a simple hairdryer. Worked perfectly and didn't melt the resin. haha But…"

"Good point, does the resin head stand up to the heat?  If that was a problem, instead of Sculpey you could use a 2 part sculpting epoxy putty like Aves Apoxie Sculpt, which doesn't need to be baked.  "

"That looks great! And what I love is that it is a very doable process that will allow you to somewhat quickly make new expressions as you need. Did you have any trouble when baking the sculpey onto the resin?  Thanks for sharing!"

"Your set of faces looks great!   Thanks for posting.  Were you thinking of making in-between faces to get you from one expression to another?  Or for talking mouths? That's where the computer 3d design can make as many small…"

Sculpting faces

Hello everyone,For my thesis film last year, I used 3D printing to create the different faces (masks) for the puppets. This time, I decided to create them by hand. After much toying around, I think I found a good method. Here is the base sculpture that I cast out of resin. As you can see, I sculpted out the mouth, leaving just the upper teeth. After casting 5 resin masks…See More
