the biggest achievements of 3D Printing technology in Animation industry first appeared with Coraline in 2009. Those days were initial appearance of 3D printing to public use yet it was too expensive. But when we benefit the top-notch systems in any project, it is most likely to succeed. The crew behind the scenes realized it is the Stratasys who excels at full color 3D Printing and therefore, they find their way in using Polyjet technology.
The system used to generate facial expression in Coraline was Connex by Stratasys (also a Polyjet 3D Printer). The Coaline is believed to be number one in Stop-motion animation in history with Rotten Tomatoes Score of 90% fresh.
Compared to traditional methods, we had 30 years of time save in making Coraline! That’s incredible. Using Additive manufacturing in any movie industry is highly efficient. Since it’s incredibly repetitive, realistic, high-quality, have extreme freedom in design factors and handsfree.
It’s not only Coraline and animations that benefit, but also movies have been enjoying it in different way recently.
Iron Man and RoboCop did use 3D printing to generate ultra-realistic costumes. Zero Dark Thirty also get their super advanced goggles (which is not real, because original model costs 60000$ to get) through 3D Printing.
