Does anyone have any experience using arri 150s for stop motion animation? I thought it was my other lights but its actually the arri which produces this flicker and occasional shift in light.
I have tried everything. shooting at 1 second, changing fuse and bulb, covering up the back of the light (which nearly put my studio on fire), and also taping the dimmer bit tight and nothing seems to work. Does anyone know what might be wrong? I'm using two layers of diffusion with them as well.
They are the dimmable ones and it's supposed to be continuous but it's not. Going a bit crazy with it so any advice would be massively appreciated!

This has been a really helpful thread to read! Simon, did replacing your bulbs to Osrams work in the end? I've been considering on purchasing a 2nd hand set of Dedolight DLH4s and don't want to fork out a grand if they're going to be unreliable...

Jacob , PM me and I will sort your Arri out for you.

Simon - i tend to avoid dimmers in ever situation if at all possible, so yes. It introduces colour shifts which again would unbalance my lighting and its almost always the reason for any flicker- that and the old kettle going on! which is not that bad if all the lights get affected at once from a kettle or microwave as i have software that can solve that - Its the pesky single lamp dimming that is problematic - now saying all of that i have DLH4's and have tested them and they work on a partial dim plus i have dimmers on some of my Altmans ( I know weird) and they too have never given me an issue - so yes if im up a ladder and have a director screaming, reach into my pocket for my ND's and find i have used them all up I will at that stage give the lamp dimmer a little tweak just so we can move on with a shot - however if then we have some delay with rigging or something and cant turn over I will use that time to cut some more ND and get back up that ladder and sort it out - i'm big on getting my colour balance nailed so I can manipulate in camera is the main reason for that though!! - (but thats a whole other thread) ---  saying all that I often run all lights for a set through a dimmer rack and have the master knocked back a few percent to extend the life of the lamps and to be able to do quick tweaks on a set with out getting up ladders and cutting gels - speed is the name of the game on the things i tend to work on - but never drop the sliders on the desk more that 15% or so as that tends to introduce unwanted flicker sometimes also -  wow this is getting to be a long answer !! i shall stop now!!  -- on a side note i love Lowel !! best cheapo lamps you can get peeps !! i have dozens!!!

Just an update, I bought a Dedolight DLH2 and its having the same problem. Phil they are genuine arris. Both the Dedolight and Arri have dimmers, so maybe it's that, or maybe it's something to do with the power supply. But again strange that the Lowell lights are fine. Does anyone have a link of a good guide to how to wire out a dimmer? For both Arri and Dedolight?

Phil, would you also not use the switched dimming on the Dedolight ballast?

Comment by Phil m on March 20, 2021 at 1:36pm

It's the dimmer for sure ..I would cut them off. To answer your first question yes had them on set once but gave up as the bulbs blow way too often ..go for 300's of you can and ND rather than use the dimmer. (If I have to use dimmer packs I try to never go below 85% due to inconsistency and flicker)

Can you clear this up in my head for me...they are knock off arri 150's right?? Not genuine ones??

On a side note I have dedos and use them for stopmo with no issues and have used the LED dedos also with no issue -if you can get hold of some great ..they are a bit pricey and don't offer enough control a lot of the time so would not be my choice. Before a big job I will swap out all bulbs for new ones of the exact same name for all similar lamps to be used on that set and clean my glass in the lamps to match the colours and outputs and then do a visual test on the wall and then check with a meter so I can pair up my lamps or group them in sets.

Good luck !!

All the best P

Hi Jacob. Sure. They are Osram halogen bulbs.

I don't know where the techy gets them from but here is a link from a U.K. based supplier.

Thanks for the tip Gustavo - do you have a link for them? struggling to find them, Ive been using knock offs from Ebay which might be the problem

I think I might just try that on my Dedolights! They are old, and I don't know how old the bulbs are... Thanks, guys!

Gustavo may have a point here. I've been using compact fluorescent softlights and although they last nearly forever, after a few years even they get unstable and start delivering unpredictable results. Replacing the lamps solves the problem.  The same is bound to be true for tungsten bulbs: as the filament wears out, its physical properties are bound to change... I've only really used them for live action where of course minor fluctuations don't matter.
