“Blindspotting” Gets Greenlight by Starz

A spinoff of Rafael Casal and Daveed Diggs starrer has received a go-ahead at Starz. The length of each episode of the spinoff will be around half-hour.

A branched-off story from the 2018 film “Blindspotting” will premiere in the tv screen after Starz nodded its head for the spinoff, which will explore Jasmine Cephas Jones’s character, Ashley.

Starz has confirmed the news and said that the series would follow the character Ashley, who is living an average middle-class life in Oakland when Miles, who is the father of her child and her partner, gets arrested. She then goes on to move in with his mother and half-sister and humorously struggles to survive in what is now a haywire existential crisis.

Daveed Diggs wrote, produced, and directed “Blindspotting.” This time around, he will act as an executive producer alongside his fellow co-star Rafael Casal who will be the showrunner of the show and will reprise his role as well.

Jess Wu Calder and Keith Calder will be the executive producers of the series under their banner Snoot Entertainment and will work alongside Emily Gerson Saines, Ken Lee, and Tim Palen. Lionsgate Television, who is now leveling up their game for John Wick 4 & 5 along with its TV series spinoff “The Continental,” will produce the series for Starz.

The number of episodes and a tentative release date is currently unrevealed.

Christina Davis, who is the president of the Starz official programming, made a statement about the “Blindspotting” spinoff in which she praised Daveed, Rafael, and Jasmine for making a splendid film that can naturally translate into a Starz tv series. She also highlighted the possibility of showcasing some social issues with the spinoff that the audience and the characters continue to struggle with.

The 2018 film got rave reviews from high profile critics representing the likes IndieWire, Variety, Vulture, and Guardian. Daveed Diggs’ noteworthy performance as Collin Hoskins was emphasized with adjectives in every critical review of the film. Eric Kohn went as far as to say that the Diggs performance saved the film from its “bumpier” moments that could have ruined the whole show otherwise.

Kohn also highlighted the importance of Rafael Casal in his review and said that they both “bring fascinating chemistry to the uncertainty that defines their lives.”

The film followed the journey of two pals Collin and Miles as they navigate their way through a city of Oakland that they feel has lost its identity.

Starz is world-renowned for independent film adaptations and originals that jump genres artistically. Now, “Blindspotting” is another stellar addition to the list of originals that include names like “Outlander,” “American Gods,” “Power Book II: Ghost,” young drama-“Girlfriend Experience,” horror-comedy-“Ash vs. Evil Dead,” and family drama “Vida.” Starz looks to be all geared up as it moves in an upwards direction with the likes of John Wick spinoff prequel “The Continental,” and a new installment of “The Girlfriend Experience” on its way. The later one will be based on Steven Soderbergh’s indie film of the same name.
