taking one frame at a time since 1999

looking for a good home or homes for old armature puppets

My dad worked in Hollywood in special effects for many years, including doing a lot of stop motion special effects. I have 3 or 4 wooden crates with armature puppets, I think all from commercials, probably in the '80's. They are in fair condition, the foam rubber at this point isn't the greatest, but the metal armatures are fine and there are sets of heads that go with them.

I will get some pictures and try and identify who these characters are and post more here. There are also a couple of larger armatures, one is the "backwards dinosaur" from a Mobile 1 commercial, so called because it had longer front legs than rear. I honestly don't know if this is treasure or trash but if there is some value perhaps it is to this audience.

I don't need to sell this stuff but would only like to find a good home for it. I'm in the San Diego area. I'd prefer not to give it to someone who is looking to profit. I tried to find a film school or the like but no luck.

Any suggestions? Is there a good home here? Thanks!

I'd be very interested in a chance to get some of these armatures as well.

StopmoNick has some great suggestions for other groups to check out, but the larger net you cast, the more likely you are to find people who think they will be able to make a quick buck with them on ebay.

I look forward to seeing pictures and watching this develop!

Sounds amazing!  I'd be very interested in a few armatures/puppets.  I'm up in Portland, OR so I hope that's alright.  There are tons of animators - both professional and students - up here that would love to see and experience these treasures.

Very generous of you!  It would be good to identify the armatures/puppets, as many as possible, before giving them away.

You could also post in a couple of Facebook groups, where there may well be people who will recognise some of them, or would value them for their history.  Stopmotion Puppet and Clay Animation is one group, Stop Motion Monsterland is another.  More of the older pro animators hang out there now I think.  There is also a Practical Effects group with a number of stop motion animators who have worked on films and ads from the eighties.

"Backwards Dinosaur" - wonder if it is a Brachiosaurus , a sauropod (Brontosaurus type) which had bigger front legs.

A working armature is not trash, but before someone recycles the parts into new creations, it would be good to see who might want them for what they are now.
