Stop Motion and 2D animation Hybrid.

Our professor asked us to do a Stop Motion and 2D type animation in one film.
I found the idea to be really interesting. I would love to work on this asap.

But upon researching I really haven't seen anything like this.
I would like to ask if anyone here had any experience on filming similar type of film or if you happen to cross upon one on the Internets.

I don't see much of a problem on having this done, but tips and suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Somebody on here did something like that a little while ago. I am wracking my brain, but I can't remember what it was called. Maybe someone else remembers.

I believe they did a stop motion world where the characters imaginations or memories were portrayed in 2d animation. Or maybe they were watching a tv or looking through a door... lol... sorry, this probably makes no sense.

I suppose you could also take inspiration from films like Roger Rabbit, Cool World, Michael Jackson's Moonwalker... Not exactly the same, but they all use mixed mediums. Might give you some ideas.

Boxtrolls, a 3d stopmotion film, used 2d animation of the characters in the credits.  And I also think I have seen something where the flashbacks, or a story being told within the film, were done 2d.  But I can't name a title...

That is a case of each part being a separate sequence.  I also believe there have been shorts where a 3d puppet moves in a 2d set, and also perhaps a 2 1/2 D set - like kitchen cupboards that were 3d boxes, but the surface details and handles were all drawn on.  I think the opposite has been done too, a 2d animated character moving in a 3d model set.  Sometimes a set of replacement card cutouts, sometimes composited in afterwards, with the 3d set simply acting as a background image, much like a photo of a real world location.

I know someone here once made a simple puppet with a wire body and a head which was a flat piece of card with the face drawn on it, with replacement mouth stickers used for lip synch.   Wish I could name names.

I imagine just about every combination has been done by someone sometime.  But that doesn't matter, just do a nice job with whatever mixed media option you come up with!

I just did a search for John Lewis (the name of a stop motion animator I know) plus animation - what came up first was a series of animated ads for a UK store called John Lewis.  But as it happened, here is a 2d drawn animation bear walking through what looks like a 3d stop motion miniature set, with a camera track to show the depth of the set:

I'll see if I think of anything else.

Here are 2d illustrations peeling themselves off the page and into the 3d world.   Found this by looking at the archives of videos posted on this site.

Oh I see, Thanks for the comments and suggestions.

@Mike, thanks for the films you suggested I would totally check them out :) . I love your works by the way they inspired me when I was just starting ^_^.

@StopmoNick, I saw that John Lewis ad before and it amazed me. Though they had the characters drawn digitally, printed it then had it animated ( you can view it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WKfFhUdXA5M )

Thanks for reminding me about this, now I have the look I wan't to achieve and it did gave me the idea and motivation I needed to start this project.

How about the old Paddington Bear show? Paddington was a stop-mo puppet and the rest of the characters and the sets were 2D. There's also a good 2D/stop-mo hybrid example called "Cap'n Paddy" in the portfolio page at PencilTestStudios.com.

There's "the necktie" which is a bit like the paddington style - https://www.nfb.ca/film/necktie/

I also remember catching an episode of "gravity falls" where they adding in some stopmotion - http://www.cartoonbrew.com/stop-motion/gravity-falls-does-stop-moti...

And "elk hair caddis" is a nice mix of real sets with cg animated characters - https://vimeo.com/9882509

Noel Fielding's Luxury comedy had a reoccurring segment called The Adventures of Joey Ramone. The characters are stop motion and the background is 2D. However it is pretty simple and most of the movement is quite flat.
