online resources for the stop motion animation community since 1999
I've been experimenting with the rise of the smartphones. I want to see whether the iPhones are catching up with the DSLR cameras. This is a DSLR vs iPhones ...
I tested an older iPad with Stop Motion Studio, not because I wanted to replace my dslr (Canon 7d) but just to see if it work as a learning tool. And it does, it does the essentials like show you the frames you've taken and compare to the live view. My old iPad 3rd gen had a fairly grainy image, since it was using gain to brighten up the video view. I normally take long exposures with the DSLR, which you can do if you are shooting stills, so my light levels were not designed for video which has only a part of the 1/25th (or 1/30th) of a second to gather the light. I boosted the light a bit, but the iPad video camera does best outdoors in daylight, which is much brighter.
Since most people already have a smartphone or tablet, it's a no-cost option to try out stop motion. You can improve your timing and animation in general just as well with a smartphone app. But it is not the clean uncompressed still images you get with a dslr, or the choice of lenses for different effects, so I wouldn't use it for anything that mattered a lot.
I haven't yet tried it with the iPhone SE or later iPad, which may be less grainy. That was a good idea, setting them all up to capture the same animation, under the same light, at the same time. I wondered what all the faffing about with the cardboard box was in aid of, 2 minutes in and all I knew was that you were going to compare an iPhone with a dslr, which could have been covered in the first 6 seconds. Then, the reveal, it made sense!
Hey guys, Yeh sorry Brandon. In a rush finishing the video and uploaded without checking my sausage fingers had written it wrong. It was a good experiment to see. Nick I have seen your experiments with your iPad and I understand where you're coming from. It's for those instances when you're sat in a coffee shop and some inspiration springs into your mind. Why not get that iPhone/Smartphone and capture it there and then. It keeps us being spontaneous. Nick I get what you're saying with the filming. If you've seen my videos i'm trying to appeal to a wider audience and the filming techniques and styles that are being used at present. My channel is kind of a vlog with Stop Motion elements. I'm trying to keep stop motion current.
Would be nice if Stop Motion Studio would have same options/buttons for Android as it has for apple. It misses zoom and manual camera settings (wb and such, it's just lock or auto) on Android right now (both free and $ versions).
Oh dear. Yeh that’s not too clever. I wonder why? Can’t imagine it being that hard to have the same features on both platforms? Very odd. I hope you’re liking my videos? I’m just trying to keep Stop Motion alive. Check out my new website for news etc www.myanimatedlife.co.uk
