Nick.. I tried to cover my B&S armature, with ptfe tape, you know the stuff plumbers use before the solder copper pipes, similar idea to using the clingfilm I assume right, but I find it problematic to cover / flesh out the puppet because of the Allen screws.. I can't see then when I need to tighten them.. how do I get around that.. I tried doing one build up puppet.. ptfe tape then that thin foam wrapped around to flesh it out then latex which wasn't too bad. because I could still see the joints and where the Allen key goes to tighten it.. also what about using foil to add shape then super Sculpey to sculpt it, then would I be able to bake it in the oven with a B&S armature..
Thanks Anthony, and thanks James and Dave for the comments!
I can't think of any reason you can't use foam buildup over a jointed armature. The only difference is, you would probably put a little cling wrap around the joints first so you don't gum them up. I did that when foam latex casting over ball joints anyway, you want the joint and the Allen screws that you adjust tension with to be clear.
If it is only for the Stopmo Jam though, there would be no problems with the wire lasting long enough to do all the animation - I get 5 minutes or more out of a wire armature before any breakages happen. But if you are more comfortable with jointed armatures, and get better animation out of them, then maybe you would go that way regardless of how much animation you expect to do with them.
this is a great video.. I have seen it before.. but still haven't got around to trying to do this for myself.. this would only work on wire puppets though, and not B&S puppets right..
I review Nick's videos whenever I begin on a new puppet. Thanks, Nick!
