taking one frame at a time since 1999

At last I have completed my 3D printed moco rig. It has done its first shot, and worked very smoothly. The design uses stock aluminium extrusions, and can be varied in size. It feels like I made it a bit on the large side, so will shorten the arm a little and reduce the tower height (shouldn't have added that taper - will have to design some more parts...!) I even printed out focus wheels to fit onto the lenses, as they are not cheap to buy.

The intention is to make the .stl files available at a small cost for anyone who would like to make their own rig from this design. The cost of materials has come in under 1000 GBP, and it will take about a fortnight to print all the parts, plus some construction work, soldering etc.

The focus unit could be an add-on for someone who has a slider. It would require an extra driver, but would add some versatility to the slider alone.

Congrats on finishing your build. I wonder if the guys at Dragonframe would want to feature your build? They have a Blog: https://www.dragonframe.com/blog/

Thanks, Anthony. I am just putting it through its paces and will get in touch with them once I am satisfied it is as good as it can be.

I still need to do a little work on the rotation axis. One of the great things about 3D printing is you can redesign a piece and print it out very quickly, but the disadvantage is that the scrap box fills up fast!

I'll post a video of it soon.

Looks great Simon ... You have done an amazing job. As it happens I think I'm about 30mins away and also have been building a Moco rig.

Hi Phil

It would be good to compare notes. I am in Devon, just near Cullompton. Where are you? And what stage have you got to?

Torbay area Devon - i have a part working pan & tilt some working focus and zoom controls the control box is built, programmed and working which is 90% of the battle really - currently have 4 axis running - i have built the slider sledge and have a mini slider up and running - im a few weeks away from having it all ready i suspect but really i could finish in a day if i needed to :)  it's lockdown eh!!?  fun little project - the hardest bit for me was working out the electronics and thats all complete now - i went arduino and CNC shield route and then reprogrammed the DFMOCO that comes with Dragonframe 4 - i work up in Bristol on my stop motion stuff mostly - and yes we should..maybe in a few weeks once we all can go out to play I might drop by for a cuppa..?
