Hello all,

I am setting up a new camera to DragonFrame and am unsure of what extra chords I need to buy. The camera i have is a Canon EOS Rebel T7I, at the moment I don't have any chords to connect my camera to my computer/DragonFrame software. I am aware that I need to buy a USB repeater, and an AC Adapter. Are there any brand preferences for the two? And are there any other chords I am missing?

I used the USB cable that came with the camera, which had the old large size USB plug at the computer end.  I have also bought a replacement cable when the plug at the camera end got bent, it was a cheap brand from a bargain store but it works just as well. That is for my older desktop computer which has the big USB ports.

If your computer is a laptop and only has the small USB C ports, I guess you would need an adapter, or a cable with a USB C plug on that end. I see Apple sells one, for 29.00, but I'm sure there are plenty around at under $10. https://www.apple.com/au/shop/product/MJ1M2AM/A/usb-c-to-usb-adapter  Or you might get a hub with several different ports on it, including the old USB type.

I used a USB extension cable,  hadn't heard of a "repeater", is that a powered one that boosts the signal? Looks like they can be as long as 10 metres.  My cable extension stopped working recently so I am connecting directly with the cable from the camera until I get a new one.  It was only 1.2 metres so didn't seem to have a problem with the signal weakening, but if you need a longer distance I can see why that might be needed.  I put my computer near the camera, not near the set, so I am not likely to cast a shadow on the set when taking the shot.

For my older Canon 40d, I bought the genuine Canon AC adapter, which cost me well over $100.  When I got a Canon 7d, it used different batteries and required a different adapter, and I bought a cheap one for something like $29 off eBay, with free shipping from China.  It works, but when I turn the camera on, I get a message on the camera saying there is an unfamiliar battery fitted, do I want to use this battery?  I click Yes , then I go ahead and animate as usual.  If I just switch the camera on and forget to do that (which happens a lot), when I open Dragonframe it can't find the camera, so then I remember and do it. It also causes some static on my radio, if I have that on, where the Canon adapter does not.

I've been using it for 6 years now, and it still does the job. WhenI bought it, there was a choice between extremes -  the good but overpriced Canon original AC adapter for your model, or the underpriced and a-bit-shoddy-but-works, no-name knock-off.  I think there may be some in-between models now, the names Gorich and Fotolux come up, you would need to look at some reviews since i haven't actually heard of them before.  There are videos on Youtube. Canon price their cameras competitively, then rip you off on the accessories, so it should be possible to make a decent one for less than they charge.

Rebel T7i - looks like it uses the ACK-E18 power adapter.  Here's one from Amazon Australia, so the price is in AU dollars, on Amazon USA in US dollars the price will be less.  It includes the power cord with plug suitable for your country, and the cord that goes to the camera with the dummy battery that fits in the battery compartment.  The genuine Canon ACK-e18 adapter is A $97 to A$99 here in Australia, and I'm seeing 3rd party ones at A$32 to A$40.   https://www.amazon.com.au/Glorich-ACK-E18-replacement-Adapter-Fully...
