Just put together a rather heath robinson camera dolly to do some tracking shots in a effort to give my short stop motion film  a bit more 'movement'. Constructed from 00 gauge train track and some old carriage chassis screwed to a piece of MDF. Did a rather hurried test this afternoon and it works a treat. No curved corners with my track. but its a start. Anyone else built anything similar?

Here's the shot.

Nicely done! How did you keep it from rolling around randomly, and how did you measure incremental movement?

Thank you, I was quite pleased with that as a first shot using it. I just used the plastic rail sleepers for incremental movement and a couple of credit card corners glued together attached to some rigid wire to slot in between the sleepers . Much like pegging playing cards to your bike forks so they made a motorbike sound (kind of) when you were a kid ;)

What are sleepers? When you mention a sleeper in relation to a train I think about a pullman car. Does it refer to the 'railroad ties' in the track? Any chance you could post a pic demonstrating this?

If you'd put a Manfrotto 410 jr geared tripod head on that platform you'd have a serious pice of equipment there (not that it isn't already).

Oh! I just looked at the pic again, and it's already clearly shown there - I just didn't understand what that was. Nice!! I guess by counting railroad ties (sleepers?) you can control ease-in/ease-out and speed of tracking.

Sorry, yeah railway ties . We call them sleepers over here. Thought I'd posted a picture? If not I'll do it now
Ha ha , I don't think t would take the weight. Just about accommodates the camera
Using the sleepers (railway ties , lol ) was part of the plan and it worked out pretty well. The build quality could be improved upon, but it works. Too noisy for real time video and a tad too small , but for my 1/6 world it's perfect
