Hi guys,
Newbie here! I have ambitiously decided to include a fire being lit in a animation I'm creating (well, it is boxes catching fire, then exploding, but I think I've worked out the exploding part.)
I'm trying to work out how to make fire which looks ok! I've played with some red/orange cellophane before which worked ok but it hard to manipulate / set in place. Has anyone tried any other materials or have any tricks?

Also if anyone has any advice on what could be used to replicate a spilt bottle of maple syrup, that would be awesome!

Thanks!
Beans.

I just have light in the set where the fire is, shining through coloured cellophane. Then paint the flames in afterwards in TV Paint or Photoshop. If you paint flame shapes on a separate layer, then use a smear tool, it can look quite a lot like fire.
For a "candlewick man" with flames on his head, I had some thin yellow foam shapes with armature wire sandwiched in between, so I could animate them moving. I had a backlight shining through the foam. But I added some more smaller flames, and smeared the foam flames in post as well, to give them a more transparent look.
If you want to go with cellophane, you can do replacement animation - cut out several flame shapes and replace them each frame, recycling them so they last as long as you want.
Hi Nick
Awesome ideas! I'm trying to avoid postproduction work with something like photoshop and unless I have to (but I do love the idea of the gorgeous glow a transparent layer in Photoshop could add!)!
Great idea to use foam for the flames! However I think the replacement fire with cellophane might be the best idea for what I'm working on. I'll give it a test in the next few weeks and see what looks like the best approach!

With lighting and aluminum foil, you might be able to achieve a fire look as well - similar to what Nick is saying with the cellophane and using replacement flames. Foil has a nice stiffness to where you could animate it pretty easily. I haven't actually shot any fire yet though, just smoke and glowing cracks in the ground, so take the foil idea with a grain of salt...

Great idea! I'll have a play and see what works best! Thanks!
