Short paper cut silhouette animation with overhead projector and water tank effects

https://vimeo.com/206156481

Hey, here's a short animation i did this week using an overhead projector for the main part, and a water tank for the background effects.

I've been using this technique for a while for little test shots, but as a precursor to working on something bigger i thought i'd actually complete something (however short!)

The overhead projector always adds instant "grunge" to proceedings but i'm also very pleased at the atmosphere i can get from the background effects too.

I shot with dragonframe and edited (lots of blending modes) in premiere, btw.

Looks beautiful. Very effective technique.

OH WOW!! very cool! Loved the whole apocalyptic landscape look

The combination of silhouette figures with a rich background works really well!

Did you first shoot the cloud tank effects live, then composite?  Looks too smooth to be done frame-by-frame.

I can't quite figure out how you used the overhead projector.  I still have one of those, from when I used it to enlarge sketches traced onto clear acetate to 5 metres x 8 metres to make backdrop paintings, but I haven't used it for 15 years.  It would be nice to find a new use for it.

thanks all!

yes the backgrounds are shot live and composited - sometimes a coffee 'cloud' base, general dust sparkles, salt 'rain' and milk smoke on top of each other.

for the actual animation i project on to a white screen, photograph that and animate on the projector bed (sunglasses required!)

i use glass to keep non moving parts still though the scale and fiddliness of dealing with paper silhouettes makes anything more detailed tricky - i seem to manage about 8fps.

for this the silhouette parts are one shot though i imagine i will do some multi shot compositing for that too in the future.

i use the opacity and blend modes in premiere to composite for the most part. 'multiply' combines pixel darkness with the other layers and gives the effect that it was projected alongside /on to the backgrounds.

Thanks, that all makes sense!

Great atmosphere, I love that style of animation and you got it just right!
