Animation Supplies launches Chroma Clay: The UK’s new goto plasticine for stopmotion artists Animation Supplies today announced the launch of Chroma Clay, a brandnew plasticine formulated specifically for stopmotion animation. Developed in response to the closure of the Newplast factory, which left animators and studios scrambling for alternatives, Chroma Clay is now proudly made in the UK and designed to meet the exacting demands of professional animators.
When The Telegraph published an article claiming that Aardman Animations risked running out of plasticine, the stopmotion community faced a real creative challenge. Having supplied Newplast to the animation industry for over a decade, Animation Supplies recognised the urgent need for areliable, highquality replacement that could deliver the same flexibility, colour range and durability required for filmmaking.
“Having supplied the animation industry with Newplast for as long as I can remember, we were shocked and saddened by the closure of their factory,” said Andy Simmons, founder of Animation Supplies. “Having tested all the other options available and finding that none were suitable for the demands of stop motion, we set about developing our own product. It’s been a labour of love for the last couple of years, but the effort has paid off and we are extremely pleased with the result.”
After extensive testing with professional animators and studios, Chroma Clay has been formulated to maintain smooth, consistent performance. It is soft enough to sculpt fine detail, yet firm enough to hold its shape during lengthy shoots. Unlike Newplast, Chroma Clay is waxbased, which means it can be melted, making it easy to mix colours and ideal for use with moulds.
Chroma Clay has re-established plasticine manufacture in the UK, which is something Animation Supplies is proud to be able to do.

Corpse Bride is celebrating its 20th Anniversary and returning to theaters this October! To mark the occasion, I’m sharing a short film I put together from camcorder footage I shot while working on the production. I was the Animation Supervisor at the time, so you’ll mostly see our amazing team of animators in action, plus bonus video of my dog Bianca, the voice of Scraps! The footage was captured during the final weeks of production, an incredible time to look back on.
Don’t miss the chance to experience the film again on the big screen! And if you’re at Lightbox Expo in Pasadena on October 25th, I’ll be joining a panel with Character Designer Carlos Grangel and Puppet Builder Ian Mackinnon to celebrate the artistry behind the film.

3 Cheers to Paul McConnochie for installing the Messages and Handbook from the early days of StopMotionAnimation.com! Paul originally put the 1999-2012 Archive together when the site was moved to the Ning platform in 2012. Now it has been relocated to the Archive page on this site. A new addition is the Gallery, featuring images from the 1999-2012 Message Board.
In other news, Paul and Marc Spess have been working diligently on reconstructing the 2012-2024 Messages which will be available here sometime in the future.

Many thanks to all who contributed to the StopMotionAnimation.com Message Board over the years. So much valuable information has been freely exchanged benefiting many. That was the original intention of the site back it 1999, connecting people around the world and sharing knowledge. It was a safe space to ask questions and feel supported.
There is now an effort to restore this information and make it available to future generations. Please check back soon.
