"Thanks for your quick and helpful reply. I haven't been doing the talcum powder step, although I have seen you mention it in one of your other videos. I'm going to get some and hopefully that will make a noticeable difference. I'm…"

"Thanks for the kind words, hope to see your results when the puppets are finished. Glossiness.  Yes, know what you mean. Try dusting the latex with talcum powder when it is dry.  That takes away the tackiness, and also some of the…"

Latex Build-Up Puppet Head

Hello,I'm watching StopmoNick's amazing youtube video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4uG-ZIOXZ7w and currently making both methods of a puppet head, one using a hardened interior (epoxy putty and in my case some bakable sculpey in place of the wood) with a dislocated jaw and the other with foam and dislocated jaw.As in his video, I'm using latex with acrylic paint for the surface. After enough layers, my latex dries looking very…See More

"Your thoughts are a tremendous help! I hadn't thought about the shadows until you mentioned it. Sounds like the best plan is making larger scale ants to animate. Thanks for all these tips. As always, you're a lifesaver! "

"You should try out Tahoma2D it's a stop motion program that originates from toonz, now available as OpenToonz used for production by studio Ghibli. It's a traditional animation program and a workhorse at its best. Tahoma2D is opensource…"

"I guess I could probably do it in TV Paint Animation, a 2d animation program with layers like Photoshop that I use for re-sizing and compositing my stop motion. ( There are many other 2d programs but I don't use them or know how they work.)…"

How to add hand-drawn animation onto puppet stop-frame animation?

Hello,I have an idea for a scene in a puppet stop-frame animation I'm working on. What I'm trying to do sounds fairly simple, but I haven't done anything like this myself yet so I'm looking for advice, recommendations, and how-to's. I am creating a 3D physical outdoor set with a fruit tree. I want to add tiny ants crawling along the branch and chewing through the fruit. Because the ants would be so small and the little legs tricky to animate, I'm thinking this might work best to add the ants on…See More

"Ammonia is what keeps latex from setting.  As it gets older, and as the level in the container drops so there is more air space, some of the ammonia evaporates.  I keep my older latex going for longer by mixing in a very small amount of…"

"If you look for 'How to make a doll wig' on YouTube, you will find a lot of videos showing various methods. It is quite a good idea to make a wig cap and attach the hair to that, because then you can at least alter things easily. And you…"

How to attach hair to a latex-painted puppet head?

Hi there!I made a puppet head with bake-able clay that I have now painted with liquid latex. I have some craft doll hair and I'm wondering what options I have for adhering this to the latex, any glue recommendations? Hoping to use something clean looking where you can't see the glue so much afterwards. One more question! Any tips for getting wavy hair? I found both curly and straight hair at the store but I wanted something in the middle. Anyone experience this and find a solution? Puppet is…See More

StopmoNick replied to Evie Metz's discussion What is this animators process with her puppets?
"The skin surface looks like liquid latex.  That is going by the way it folds at the joints, or anywhere it bends.  Some of the parts of the puppets look like plasticine, which allows her to re-sculpt and make changes.  Some does look…"
