Replicating clay sculpt with a silicone mold
5 Replies

For a character that I want to portray in different stages of their life, young and older age, I think a good direction might be to sculpt the head in plasticine clay and then make a mold from which…Continue

Hi friends,Anyone have any experience with this? My ultra cal mold of a puppet head has some flaws in the surface, air bubbles and such. Before pouring silicone into the mold, could I use something…Continue

Tips for smoothing chavant clay in tight areas

Hi friends,If you happened to catch my last post where I was asking for advice on duplicating a clay sculpt, I can provide an update that the replica was fairly successful. I was able to use smooth-on dragon skin 10 silicone to create a two part silicone mold of my original sculpted puppet head which I used chavant clayette clay for. I'd never used clayette before, but got it for a deal at my local art store and it turned out to be very soft and great to sculpt with.Once that mold was complete,…See More

"I honestly don't remember what we used but, I think that you should test whatever substance you want to try, against the silicone first. To make sure it doesn't compromise the silicone curing. A soft clay you know to be silicone proven…"

"If you have some cavities in the surface you could just gently press in some soft Chavant clay to fill them. You might even be able to use a mould wax to smooth out imperfections (as long as it is compatible with platinum silicone if that’s…"

"Hi Evie I have done exactly what you describe for one of my characters, and it worked very nicely. I made a silicone mould in one block, then cut through the back of the head to release the clay sculpt. When pouring the Chavant, you need to have it…"

"The silicone mould. as shown in your link, should work very well.  I used to use dental alginate - same stuff used for making actor's face moulds - for a quick temporary mould that is flexible and can be removed from each cast without…"

Jasper Kuipers replied to Evie Metz's discussion Silicone hands - wires poking out
"A simple but effective tip to reduce the risk of wire poking through is to put small dots of epoxy glue on the wire tips (and let those cute) before casting the hands in silicone. This way you get rid of the sharpness of the cut wire and also make…"

"Another technique is to take some braided string (I use kite string), remove the core and slide the sheath over the finger wires. I put glue underneath, and it means you don't have to do as much trimming as with physio wrap."

"I only do silicone hands when they are part of a silicone body where it needs to be seamless - for clothed figures I tend to use foam buildup for the body and build the hands up with latex over the wire.  Only the head is silicone, most of the…"
